4. CAMPO PEQUENO – The bullring that became a theater and a shopping center

The Campo Pequeno are the bullring of Lisbon, it originally hosted exclusively bullfighting shows. In Portuguese, an arena is called Praça de Touros (Bullring). Located on the square of Campo Pequeno (Place du Petit Champ), the current complex has a capacity of 10,000 people. Built in 1891 by the architect António José Dias da Silva but gradually abandoned in the following decades, the Campo Pequeno reopened in 2006 completely renovated. On this occasion, a commercial gallery of 60 shops, 8 cinemas and 10 places of life (bars, cafes, restaurants and esplanades) opened in the arena. The Atrium Saldanha, designed by the architect Ricardo Bofill, was inaugurated in March 2008. This shopping center occupies the first 3 floors of the building of the same name. The rest of the 9 floors of the building is occupied by offices. The Atrium is located right on Duque de Saldanha Square, one of the central squares of the city, around which much of Lisbon’s economic activity is based. The Almada Fórum is not in Lisbon itself, it is located on the municipality of Almada, the city just after the 25 April bridge. If during your stay you go to the beaches of Costa da Caparica or visit the Cristo Rei (Christ King), you will pass nearby. The mall is a bit like the competitor of Lisbon’s giant shopping center, Colombo. Opened in 2002, it occupies nearly 79,000 m2 and is home to 248 stores and 14 cinemas on 3 floors. The top floor with its 35 restaurants has a splendid view of the Tagus River, the 25 April Bridge and the Cristo Rei (Christ King) of Almada.
Small tip : if you find yourself in the caps when returning from the beaches of Caparica or your visit to Cristo Rei, take a break in this mall until traffic becomes fluid again.
